The Index of Decay is a conceptual coffee table book that presents an archival approach to urban exploration, documenting abandoned spaces through a systemized editorial lens. The project treats decay as collected evidence, focusing on the visual and material traces left behind rather than narrative storytelling.
The book centers on a single site—Battleship Island—with each spread acting as an indexed record of the location. Imagery is organized to highlight texture, erosion, and structural breakdown, allowing one place to be examined from multiple angles over time. A consistent grid and restrained pacing support a methodical, archival reading experience.
Typography was selected with care to reinforce the role of the archivist. Type choices prioritize legibility, neutrality, and historical reference, functioning as a quiet framework that categorizes and supports the imagery without competing with it. Together, the editorial systems create a controlled contrast between documentation and deterioration, resulting in a cohesive publication that frames urban decay as a studied, intentional record rather than spectacle.
